This is why Little Islands are shortlisted in the ‘Design in Mental Health Awards 2019’ with our very own ‘Jolly Trolley’
Little Islands believe in keeping things “real”, therefore the Jolly Trolley has been designed to be fully tactile so that people with dementia are able to touch it and interact with it whilst still understanding exactly what it is. We also want to stimulate the senses therefore this stimulates the “touch” sense.
The Jolly Trolley uses sensory lighting, bright clear images and music to promote reminiscence. We have designed specific reminiscence films using images and music that stir happy memories of those living with dementia. This has proven to work really well for de-escalation and helps calm down a person living with dementia by taking them to a happy place.
The Jolly Trolley comes with a full PA system and microphone, which helps to inspire participation in those that generally do not get involved with group activities.
It is fully portable, which means it is great for person- centred care and can be taken into the rooms of those who are unable to get out of bed.
It has a USB so you can add your own media which means you can personalise the trolley and add content that is of interest to an individual.
All of this helps to create a pathway of communication for those living with dementia. It also helps to give a gentle push to those who may appear closed off and hard to reach, encouraging them to get involved and have a Jolly good Time!
